Our Story

San Francisco has lived with sidewalk litter for a long time. During and after the pandemic, everyday trash and illegal dumping became noticeably worse in many neighborhoods. While the City provides a 311 reporting system, in reality, litter on sidewalks often sits for days or weeks before anything happens.

The reason is structural. The City maintains the streets, but property owners are generally responsible for the sidewalks in front of their buildings. That split leaves many blocks without consistent, day-to-day care for basic litter.

On my own block, the first response was what most neighbors try. We added a trash can and organized volunteer cleanups. It helped—for a short time—but the trash always came back. That’s when one simple truth became clear: a daily problem needs a daily solution.

So we tried something different. A professional cleaner was hired to sweep the sidewalks every day and report dumped items to the City. The change was immediate. The block looked better, people treated it with more respect, and neighbors felt better walking their street. For the first time in years, the sidewalk stayed clean.

Word spread. Neighbors started asking how the same thing could be done on their blocks, and Clean Streets was created to make that possible. It is a community-funded way to keep sidewalks clean through regular, professional service—not occasional volunteer efforts. It gives neighborhoods a simple, reliable way to care for their shared spaces and keep them clean, every day.

How it works

Neighbors chip in small amounts—as little as $5/month—to fund daily cleaning by professional staff. No volunteers. No 311 waits. Just consistently clean sidewalks.

Why it matters

A clean street signals care. It makes people feel safer, more connected, and proud of where they live. This simple idea has transformed blocks across the Mission for over 5 years .

Real jobs, real wages

Every dollar funds stable, living-wage employment for people in our community. This isn’t charity—it’s investing in neighbors who take pride in keeping our streets clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Transparency is key. Here is how we operate.

About Clean Streets

I am a long-time San Francisco resident who has always been bothered by the litter on our streets. During the pandemic in 2020, after the city temporarily halted cleaning services, the problem got far worse. I envisioned Clean Streets as an opportunity to have a positive impact on the community I love, by helping address our long-standing litter problem and providing high-paying jobs.
No. While we operate on a model where 100% of contributions go toward litter pickup and we do not take a profit ourselves, we have not gone through the formal legal process to establish 501(c)(3) status.
If you make a donation, 100% of your contribution funds litter pickup. We do not take a profit. I work with the community to identify hard-hit areas and channel funds directly to cleaning those zones.

Service & Operations

While the city sweeps streets, empties city trashcans, and removes large items reported to SF311, businesses and residents are technically responsible for maintaining sidewalks.
Not necessarily. Contributions are pooled into a general fund used to clean areas that need it most. Rather than restricting funds to a single block, we direct resources to "hard hit" zones.
Yes, but this requires a Sponsorship level contribution. Because activating a dedicated route requires more logistics, we can only guarantee service if the contribution covers the full cost of that route. Contact us for a quote.

Scope of Work

No, we do not remove encampments or disturb the homeless. We strictly enforce this policy without exception.
We don't remove large items ourselves, but we do report large items we encounter to SF311. SF311 typically addresses the issue within a couple of hours.
Our service is strictly for the public right-of-way (sidewalks and curbs). We do not enter private property lines, recessed doorways, or gated alcoves to ensure safety and avoid liability.

Our Workers

Workers are independent contractors who get paid 1 month in advance via PayPal at a rate approximately 2 times the minimum wage. Despite this generous pay, because we take no profit, our services cost way less than other options.
